Python Programming

Syllabus

Unit 1: Python Turtles

Week 1: Introduction to Python

  • Understand the rules and policies of the course and expectations of you as a
  • contributing member of our learning community.
  • Create Replit and EarSketch accounts.

Week 2: Getting to Know The Turtle

  • Explore the EarSketch interface.
  • Program simple Python programs to make music and draw basic shapes.
  • Utilize FOR loops to reduce the number of lines of code required to draw patterns.

Week 3: Programming the Turtle to Draw Shapes

  • Program the turtle using pre-defined functions to draw simple structures.
  • Use top-down design to create more sophisticated structures from simple shapes.
  • Reflect on EarSketch and Replit programming skills.

Week 4: Controlling the Turtle Using Variables

  • Represent a value with a python variable.
  • Evaluate the value of a variable as a result of an assignment.
  • Write code to accept input from the user.

Week 5: Turtles that Make Decisions

  • Write conditional statements that control the sequential flow of code.
  • Create musical scores by utilizing artificial intelligence.

Unit 2: GUI

Week 6: Tkinter GUI

  • Create an app that uses event handling to respond to user interactions such as button
  • clicks and typing of text in textboxes.
  • Develop a calculator app using buttons and textboxes.

Week 7: Building a Recipe: Looping Part I

  • Represent a value with a Boolean python variable.
  • Evaluate the value of a Boolean variable as a result of an assignment.

Week 8: Logical Operators

  • Write conditional expressions using Python logical operators such as NOT, AND, and OR.
  • Create musical scores by parsing a string of characters with logical operators.

Week 9: Looping

  • Rewrite code that uses a sequence of steps with a loop.
  • Given an algorithm determine whether a WHILE loop or FOR loop would be optimal.
  • Draw art utilizing the Python turtle graphics library and repetition structures.

Week 10: Function Parameters

  • Create functions that calculate the area of a rectangle by passing in parameter values.
  • Design an outdoor garden using modular programming techniques in Python.

Week 11: Value Returning Functions

  • Write functions that accept parameters and return values.
  • Create a rock paper scissors game using functions that return values.

Week 12: Strings

  • Use string methods to extract substrings.
  • Locate specific substrings within a string.
  • Develop an app that generates strong passwords.

Unit 3: Pythonia Challenge

Week 13: Pythonia App Design

  • Prototype the functionality of an app using a storyboard.
  • Use top-down design to create an app.
  • Create word game apps where the user is given clues to find the secret phrase.

Week 14: Pythonia App Development and Testing

  • Combine every Python skill to develop an app tailored to the student’s interest.
  • Improve the design of an app through end-user testing.
  • Implement and apply an appropriate algorithm for the app's functionality.

Week 15: Pythonia App Championship

  • Demonstrate mastery of programming skills by creating and finalizing a customized app.
  • Submit the project planning guide and the final challenge app to the dropbox.
